The Film Society of Lincoln Center, one of the world's most prominent film presentation organizations, opened a new theatre complex across the street from the Walter Reade Theater. Named the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center, it spans 17,500 square feet and holds two movie theatres, each of which is equipped with two Kinoton FP 38 E PREMIERE dual-format projectors for 35mm and 16mm films. The projectors feature a direct, highly dynamic digitally controlled intermittent drive that ensures unrivalled picture steadiness and brightness as well as excellent focus. They were professionally installed by Cinema Technology Service, LLC, a valued partner of Kinoton's U.S. subsidiary, Kinoton America.
The new 144-seat Francesca Beale Theatre has wall panels reminiscent of 1920s Italian opera house curtains, while the smaller 87-seat Howard Gilman Theatre is in a more modern style with blackened pilasters framing the screen. An amphitheater equipped with a 152” plasma screen will accommodate visiting lecturers, film-themed panels, and programs related to the mission of the Film Society.
The opening of the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center has been eagerly awaited by both film lovers and distributors of arthouse movies. Before this, the Film Society had to manage with a single theatre on its campus. The two additional auditoriums will allow the Film Center to work with schools and universities and offer more special screenings for adults and children. Now the Society will be able to help its stakeholders experience the many ways in which filmmakers and other artists use moving images to express themselves and convey messages to filmgoers. The Munroe Film Center will also host the New York Film Festival in late September. Its location in the heart of the Upper West Side makes it New York City’s new must-go venue.
